St Kieran’s College

St Kieran’s College

With a proud tradition as the oldest secondary school in Ireland, St Kieran’s College is the diocesan school of Ossory and is under the patronage of the Bishop of Ossory.

The course of studies offered to students at St. Kieran’s College comprises six years, three years at Junior Certificate cycle and three years at Leaving Certificate cycle. Pupils take the state Junior Certificate Examination at the end of the three year cycle. It is our expectation that all pupils take Transition Year as their first year of the Leaving Certificate Cycle. In Fifth Year, depending on the subject options, pupils have the opportunity of taking the traditional Leaving Certificate programme or the Leaving Certificate Vocational programme. Both culminate in the state Leaving Certificate Examination at the end of Sixth Year.

St. Kieran’s College holds a record number of Leinster and All-Ireland titles in all grades, and is renowned as a hurling nursery for future stars of the game. To help students integrate into First Year, an inter-class hurling league is run each year.

Each year the College fields five hurling teams, U-14A, U-14B, U-16A, U16B, and the College Senior Hurling Team.

Gaelic Football is another important activity within the sporting life of St. Kieran’s College, with teams participating in Leinster Competitions at U-14 and U-16 levels.

St. Kieran’s College has four soccer teams, one of which caters specifically for First Year students, and three others at Junior and Senior levels.

In recent years the schools reputation for Athletics and Cross-Country running has reached new heights with four teams catering for all age groups.

The school also competes in Equestrian events such as Hunter Trials and Show-jumping as well as Handball, Swimming and Golf.

Extra-curricular activities of a non-sporting nature include Chess, Bridge, Music, Debating, Filming and Quizzes.

The educational facilities in the College include three fully equipped modern science laboratories, two modern computer rooms, a film editing suite and a theatre. These are complemented by specialist rooms for art, music, technical graphics, materials technology, career guidance and pastoral care.

The College is surrounded by five well-maintained playing pitches. St. Kieran’s College also has a recently refurbished gymnasium, with 2 glass-backed squash courts, 2 handball alleys, a golf tuition area with practice net, a fully equipped gym containing state of the art aerobic and anaerobic equipment, with changing and shower facilities. The main gymnasium consists of a large floor area which can cater for indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, etc.
